Good News Clubs
I’m sure every American agrees that we live in a country that was founded on the basis of freedom, and that we must maintain our rights to that freedom.

The Constitution states that every person in this country is equal and has the freedom to express his or her beliefs in any way, as long as it does not harm another human being.

Therefore, I am in support of the Liberty Counsel lawsuit against Elk River Area School District #28 (October 2008 MCC). The district should be called to account for its rejection of allowing the Good News Club to participate in school activities.

Elected officials
“All that has to happen for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.” — Edmund Burke.

It never ceases to amaze me that many people don’t want to get involved at all in selecting and endorsing candidates for any level of public office, and won’t even vote in the primary elections and label all politicians as corrupt because of the corrupt and immoral behavior of a few politicians. Labels seldom fit. Under good leadership, the Republican Party has fielded good people for public office in Minnesota, especially during the last decade.

I am more amazed at the report that only 30 percent of “evangelicals” voted in the last general election. When we consider that in the United States we have a government elected “by the people,” why do Bible believers let Bible unbelievers decide those who will be in authority over us, and to whom we are admonished to “submit to” according to Romans 13:5? I am persuaded that Bible believers can make a significant difference in those who we will have to “submit to” after the election—if all of us vote.

The character of a candidate is important, but when we vote for a name, we are really voting on issues more than the personality of the candidate. There are several issues that confront us: the economy, illegal immigration, energy sources, etc. But the issues of sanctity of life and the sanctity of marriage are the issues that separate the haves from the have-nots. If a candidate cannot pass the test on these issues, then we have to look for another.

We don’t have to wait for legislation or a court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Presently, we can vote for a candidate whose family is demonstrating an alternative to abortion.

Also consider the appointment of judges who will judge according to constitutional law instead of legislating from the bench.

Our nation is facing its greatest crisis since Pearl Harbor and the Civil War. As I see it, the threat of terrorism is not going to go away this side of divine intervention.

Of the 28 times I have voted in general elections, a few times I had to vote for the least objectionable candidate (e.g. Richard Nixon’s re-election in 1972) to try to defeat the most objectionable candidate.

The quote from Edmund Burke (above) reminds me of a Bible verse. “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4:17).

The founding fathers of our nation prayed to ask “providence” for wisdom and guidance before completing the draft of the Constitution of the United States, so please pray and then vote. Also ask your friends and relatives to do likewise.

Obama presidency
As the election draws closer, and I drive the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul, I get more frightened at the very real possibility of Barack Obama becoming my president, and I truly want to run away!

Yes, I too am disappointed with the final years of the Bush presidency, and yes I’m disappointed and frustrated with the weak, ineffective Congress. But as a Christian, I continue to pray, knowing that God is in control. What really frightens me, however, is knowing that many of my neighbors, fellow church members and people I thought I knew, are voting for Obama. Are they blind? What has swayed them to think he would be good for us?

In a letter I received from Focus on the Family Action, we are told that the following “headlines” may be reality if the left wins: 1) the Freedom of Choice Act will be signed, invalidating all state and federal pro-life laws, 2) the Defense of Marriage Act will be repealed and the gay lobby will celebrate federal benefits and marriage rights, 3) the largest tax increase in history will become reality, used to pay for new entitlements and foreign aid, 4) “don’t ask, don’t tell” will mean that gays are “out” in the armed forces and homosexuality will be accepted as the “norm,” and 5) Obama’s first appointee to the Supreme Court will probably be Hillary Clinton.

If these things don’t frighten you, you haven’t been paying attention. As Christians, our Master has given us the power to determine the quality of our government and its leaders, and if we don’t use it wisely, we are like the servant who received a trust from the Master and decided not to do anything with it—not to get involved.

That was called sin then, and it would be sin now! As Americans, we did not ask to be given a government of which we are the stewards, but nevertheless, the Master has given it to us and he will call us to account!

James A. Garfield, our 20th president, stated “if our culture is moving the wrong way in America, it is because of Christian non-involvement!”

Come on Christians, God has given you responsibilities to be involved in our government, and that means educating ourselves as to the issues and the people, and then getting out to vote! God commands you to do that!

Political propaganda
In a recent column John Whitehead used the terminology of the Left. He referred to the “rigid right-wing mindset” and “power-hawking warmongering of the Christian Right,” among other Liberal mantras. He also referred to the “dismal failure of the Bush presidency;” a phrase the Left has been using since the minute Bush took office.

If a prominent columnist in the Minnesota Christian Chronicle uses the terminology of the Left it means their propaganda is working. It appears Whitehead has fallen into the groupthink of the Washington D.C. Leftist media elite. It’s no wonder we’re in the shape we’re in.

First of all, standing up for Christian values and fighting to rectify the secularization that has been pushed by the “rigid” Anti-Christian Left for at least 50 years, is not “standing for the erection of a Christian State.” Also, standing for a strong U.S. military and expecting our government to do its constitutional duty of “providing for the common defense” is not warmongering. To use these Left-wing terms lends credence to their false premises.

Secondly, to refer to the Bush presidency as a “dismal failure” is way off. I’m not saying it has been a roaring success, but it certainly hasn’t been a dismal failure. Certainly, the economy is faltering, but the problems we are now facing were caused by the Left.

In 1977 Carter enacted the Community Reinvestment Act, which was used by ACORN as a way to get poor people into houses they couldn’t afford and to get rich in the process. In 1999 Bill Clinton repealed Glass-Steagall, which prevented the linkage between commercial banks and most hard assets. These two actions by the Left are the cause of today’s economic problems.

Both Bush and McCain called for regulations to fix this problem before it blew up, but they were blocked by Democrats who were making millions off the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac frauds. Bush’s only failure was in not fighting hard enough against them, but that’s the kind of “let’s get along” mentality that Whitehead seems to prefer.

The fact is Bush inherited a stock market crash and a weakened national security system from Bill Clinton. Then 9/11 happened and the economy tanked. By 2006 we were, and still are, winning the War On Terror, and the economy was going well—except for the housing bubble caused by the policies of the Left, and the energy crunch which was also caused by the Left who refuse to allow us to tap our own energy sources. The economy has only gotten worse since 2006 when the Democrats gained control of congress.

It is very disheartening to pick up the MCC and see the same kind of Left-wing talking points we usually see in the mainstream press. I’m not defending everything the so-called “Christian Right” has done, nor am I saying Bush is a wild success. But to use words like “dismal failure,” and “rigid” and “warmongering,” is just plain wrong. It amounts to accepting the false premises of the Left. And once you’ve done that, you’ve lost.

Someone once said “tell a lie often enough and it will become the truth.”  The sad thing is this tactic seems to work, and even on Christians who are supposed to have discernment and recognize propaganda when they see it. It’s very disappointing to see such a prominent writer in the MCC not only fall for that propaganda, but actually participate in furthering it.
